Happy New Year!

Super short!

The end of last year found all art classes working on HLSR art, so I really didn't have too much to blog about, but did post a few pictures of artwork in progress to Instagram, so please follow thereddesk for more immediate images of what the kids are up to.  Gosh that was a long sentence . . . was it a sentence ???

I will begin blogging more regularly now that we will be working on smaller and shorter projects.

One project I actually completed was a collaborative piece my kids worked on LAST YEAR! Hope you enjoy seeing the end product as much as I do.

Thanks for hanging in there!  More to come in the upcoming weeks!

Welcome Back!

It's been fast and furious in the art room so far this year.  Here are a few snapshots of what the kids have been up to.

We started with all levels making portfolios for the year.  Here are a few samples. . .

Junior high students are working on a Matisse inspired project where they are "drawing with scissors."  I will post a separate article outlining the details with more pictures soon.

Art III students are incorporating random objects into sketches.  Their final objective is to create a digital photo album.  As with JH, there will be more of these pictures (videos too) to come. . .

Art I students are working on contour drawings with a focus on negative/positive space and value.

Art II students are working on a grid drawing--6 drawings revolving around a common theme.

Please check back regularly or sign up to get email alerts when there is a new post.  I'm also working on an Instagram account.  Once I figure it out, I will let you know!

So Long, Farewell, auf Wiedersehen, Good Night

Any Sound of Music fans out there??  Well, this isn't good night, but it is good-bye for the 2015-2016 school year.  It's been a busy year. . .productive . . .a learning experience for us all.  I thought I would publish one last post to show what we've been doing to close out the school year.

High School spent the last couple of weeks working on Symbolic Self-Portraits.  To start with, we traced the kids' shadows onto a large sheet of paper (thanks to my old overhead I stashed).  Anyone else remember doing this in elementary?  Those black construction paper silhouettes?  Anyway, after tracing the profiles, the kids filled their heads with drawings of a variety of things (likes, dislikes, future goals, etc.) and added color.  Here are some of the results:

The junior high kids did something similar.  They created a summer bucket list.  The idea was to fill a sand bucket with things they want to do this summer.  Here are some of the results:

Thank you for visiting, and please check in next year to see what new things we get into in the art room!

Have a great summer!

Watercolor and Ink Compositions

High school students worked for a couple of weeks using watercolor and India ink to complete a project.  The lesson was found HERE.  We followed the steps pretty much to the letter with the exception of applying the ink.  The kids used calligraphy pens instead of brushes to apply the ink. Most students did the project correctly; however, there were a few blunders.  My own example consisted of two different paintings put together as I kept painting outside of the lines!

Here are some up close finished products . . .

All of the projects are on display outside of the art room.

Thanks for stopping in!
